The sole institution vested with the power to issue
notes and coins to be used as legal tender on the territory of Romania
is the NATIONAL BANK OF ROMANIA (NBR).
The domestic currency is the LEU (pl. LEI) with its fractional coin, the
BAN (pl. BANI). As of 1 July 2005, Romania's legal tender, previously
coded as ROL, has been redenominated so that ROL 10,000 are exchanged
for 1 new LEU (RON).
The existing banknotes and coins, i.e. the old lei, shall be legal
tender until end-December 2006. By 31 December 2006, the existing
banknotes and coins, i.e. the old lei, are to be replaced gradually by
the new banknotes and coins.
